The first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite

Sputnik 1 (Russian: "Спутник-1") was the first Earth-orbiting artificial satellite. It was launched into an elliptical low Earth orbit by the Soviet Union on 4 October 1957, and was the first in a series of satellites collectively known as the Sputnik program.
