An infantry battalion commander in Russia’s Far East Sergey Solnichnicov was killed on Wednesday after he threw himself over a granade to protect people around him when a grenade fell near by during a training exercise, Eastern Military District spokesman Alexander Gordeev said.
“An emergency situation occurred during a grenade throwing exercise. A grenade…bounced off the trench wall. The battalion commander immediately reacted to the situation, pushed the conscript soldier away and covered the granade with his body,” Gordeyev said.
The injured officer was taken to a military hospital in Belogorsk, but died one and a half hours after.
"Remember, love, grieve ... Mayor, you are our military father. Eternal memory to you "- is the status of his former soldiers.
