During the Siege of Leningrad, St. Isaac's Cathedral (Isaakievskiy Sobor), was the tallest building and very visible from all sides of Leningrad, and remained intact and untouched. In the beginning of the war, the threat to Leningrad and its suburbs became apparent. The conversation of how to evacuate the art treasures of the palaces began to Pavlovsk, Peterhof, Pushkin, and other inland locations.

However, not all art treasures managed to get out. The question arose where to find reliable storage for all items. Options were rejected one by one, until a former artillery officer, who has offered to create storage in the basement of St. Isaac's Cathedral. The venture was risky, but there is a simple explanation for that - when shelling the city begin, the Germans would use the dome as a checking point and will try to preserve this point for further attack. His proposal was accepted. So, all 872 days of the blockade museum treasures wasn't not removed and lay in the safe place and it has never been a direct artillery fire.

And yet, the dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral was closed gray camouflage fabric during the siege. With reference was lost for plane, and the probability of falling bombs was small.

It is intended as the future cornerstone of Russia's nuclear triad, and is the most expensive weapons project in the country.[5] The weapon takes its name from bulava, a Russian word for mace.

A girlfriend of mine from USA asked me some questions about Russia. I answered on them with pleasure. :)

1) What is the biggest misconception about Russia?

Maybe that bears are walking freely in the streets of Russia. :)

2) How do Russians view the West?

I can not answer for all Russians. Everybody have their own opinion about it.

3) What is the easiest way to impress a Russian?

I think better don't try to impress somebody, just be yourself.

4) What is the biggest difference between Russia and the West?

To my opinion, they are more individualist than people in Russia. One says in Russia about it: "They have different mentality". It's not good or bad. It's a fact.

5) What are some family names in Russia? For instance, in America people can call their dads, "father," "papa," "pops," "dad," and "pa." Grandmas have many names as well, "grandma," "maw-maw," "meow," "nana," etc.

In Russia people tell their dad's: Father - отец - [otecz], папа - [papa], батя - [batya], or abbreviation - pa.

Grandma - бабушка - [babuska], abbreviation - ba.

6) Dimitri Yushkevich said, "I'm not crazy. I'm Russian." So, are Russians crazy?

Noooo! :) People from West think so, because difference in West and Russian mentalities.

7) When is the best time to visit Russia?

In summer or early autumn. But, it can be interesting for somebody from country with hot climate to visit Russia during winter and see a lot of snow.

To my opinion, the capital of our country - Moscow, also Saint-Petersburg, lake Baikal, Kamchatka. But there are many beutiful places in Russia.

Scarlet Sails (White Nights Festival), St. Petersburg 2011. Amazing show Scarlet Sails (Russian: Алые паруса) is a celebration in St. Petersburg, Russia is the most massive and famous public event during the White Nights Festival. The tradition is highly popular for spectacular fireworks, numerous music concerts, and a massive water-show including battle among tens of boats full of pirates on the waters of Neva river. The Scarlet Sails show celebrating the end of school year 2007 was attended by more than one million people. In 2010 public attendance grew up to 3 million, and entertainers were such stars as Cirque du Soleil, Mariinsky Ballet and Antonio Banderas among others.

This tradition began here after the end of WWII, when several Leningrad schools united to celebrate the ending of a school year in connection with symbolism of the popular 1922 children's book Scarlet Sails by Alexander Grin. At the first celebration a boat with scarlet sails was sailing along the English Embankment and the Admiralty Embankment towards the Winter Palace. Although it was designed to update the rusty revolutionary propaganda, the "Scarlet Sails" tradition eventually evolved into a massive demonstration of freedom from "schools and rules" and became the most popular public event ever since, celebrating the ending of school year annually.

Crowds of about one million people are treated to a wide variety of free entertainment provided by the city of St. Petersburg. Entertainment also includes appearances by popular rock stars, as well as St. Petersburg Symphony Orchestra, ballet, and other classical acts, performing on several stages simultaneously during the days of the event. The show also includes a series of large-scale events on the waters of Neva river, such as rowing and motorboat races, and a massive battle with pirates culminating with appearance of a tall ship sporting spectacular "Scarlet sails". The show has been always the essential part of the White Nights celebration.

The popularity of both the book and the tradition was boosted after the 1961 release of the film Scarlet Sails.

Russia’s giant Mosfilm, one of the largest and oldest film studios in Europe, has teamed up with Google to launch a channel on YouTube, where Mosfilm will be showcasing its feature films free of charge, Russia Today reports. The channel already has 50 films available in HD on its virtual “shelves” and is planning to add five new films each week.

By the end of the year there will be up to 200 films from Mosfilm’s golden collection of several thousand, accompanied by subtitles. Most importantly, the company can be sure that only legal copies of its productions will be available. Moreover, thanks to YouTube’s state-of-the-art technology, Mosfilm will be able to track down pirate copies of its films.

“The primary objective of the project is to enable internet users to watch legal copies of films in high quality and put an end to illegal use of our productions. YouTube’s special system will make it possible to block off the illegal content,” head of the studios, Karen Shakhnazarov, was quoted as saying.

It is not the first time that Mosfilm has aimed to make it big on the internet. It has recently given access to over 500 films from its golden collection, from Eisenstein’s Battleship Potemkin to Tarkovsky’s Ivan’s Childhood. The selection features legendary works by Soviet and Russian filmmakers, available for free viewing in the screening rooms of Mosfilm’s online cinema, accompanied by English, French and German subtitles.

His specialty is working in close contact with his subject. He prefers to use a wide angle lens at close range - which is precisely the way he has managed to make his shots of bears unique. Porogi (Thresholds) is the oldest and longest serving hydroelectric plant in Soviet Union and Russia, celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2009. There is an eponymous village nearby with a population of twenty people, which nowadays, due to a station, is self-sufficient from external sources of electricity. The village is located on the shore of an artificial reservoir; this is an equipment power station which was built by the Germans and has been working almost continuously since 1909. Nearby, an abandoned mini-plant for the smelting of ferroalloys, lies. The hydroelectric plant was originally built for the needs of the mini-plant, and since 1993 the complex has received the status of a monument of international significance by UNESCO.

There is unique equipment brought from all over Europe and all facilities have not been reconstructed since they have been built. The hydroelectric plant is shown in the following photos, with the image of the Ural Mountains in the background.

The Kaliningrad Zoo was founded in 1896. It was formerly known as the Königsberg Tiergarten in the then German town of Königsberg, which in 1945 became part of Russia and was renamed Kaliningrad. Thus, the zoo is one of the oldest zoological gardens in Russia, and one of the largest. Its collection, which extends over 16.5 ha, comprises 315 species with a total of 2264 individual animals (as of 2005).

Königsberg Tiergarten comprised upward of 2000 individual animals in the year 1909. It was due to the military engagement during the taking of a city in April 1945 that only a badger and fallow deer stayed alive. A few day after the takeover, solders found a frightened and starveling hippopotamus. He had six wounds.

"History of treatment of the hippopotamus" was written by livestock specialist Polonsky Vladimir Petrovich.

"Hippopotamus. 18 years old. Body height is big. Nickname is Hans. Was wounded fourfold. Also twice wound itself. It was 13 days without foof and water. Begun to cure of hippopotamus 14 April 1945 year. Firstly I lend assistance of water. After that I tried to give him milk. Next time - a milled beet. Hippopotamus falled to it. But he refused after three days. I was making haste to give him vodka. Gave four liters. After that he asked to eat very much. A fortnight passed. Hippopotamus is eating a little. I decided to give vodka - four liters. He was engorging. It's turned out well to save him after 21 days. I achieved full recovery after 1 month and 19 days. Now I'm going in for the training - driving astride the hippopotamus through the park".

Lake Baikal (Russian: о́зеро Байка́л Ozero Baykal, pronounced [ˈozʲɪrə bʌjˈkɑl]; Buryat: Байгал нуур Baygal nuur, meaning "the rich lake") is the world's second most voluminous lake, after the Caspian Sea. It is the most voluminous freshwater lake in the world with an average depth of 744.4 m (2,442 ft) and contains a total of roughly 20 percent of the world's surface fresh water. Located in the south of the Russian region of Siberia (between Irkutsk Oblast to the northwest and the Buryat Republic to the southeast, near the city of Irkutsk), the body of water is also known as the "Pearl of Siberia".

This is a story about an inhabitant of the Moscow underground who avoided daylight. From the cradle to the grave, he spent time in the underground tubes (the tunnels of the metro).

He settled down and made a crash pad near the side of the tracks. He made friends with metro workers and distracted them from rigorous work. He rejected living in a Moscow flat and chose to settle in the underground.

What did he see in cold, smelly, damp, dirty and twilit tubes?

Let me introduce the inhabitant of the rotunda "Krasnogvardeyskaya" the cat. His nickname is Ankle Boot (Башмак in Russian).

A metro worker took Ankle Boot then a kitten to the underground. Ankle Boot felt at home and the underground quickly became a new haven for him. He understood where and where not to go in the underground, thus his life was not in danger. The clever kitty successfully made his way around the tracks. Ankle Boot had grown among tubes and airshafts. Overall, he was a pet. He was meeting metro workers in the morning. Later, he would walk all day long in tubes and usher the workers in the evening.

Moscow underground tunnels.

Sitting in on meetings was one of Ankle Boots’ favorite pastimes. He would listen to discussions as if he had a full understanding of what was being said. One day, workers objurgated Ankle Boot as they were working and he was resting. Somebody said, "He could catch a mouse." When workers arrived the next morning, Ankle Boot was sitting near the doors of the office with several mice lying beside him.

Nobody knew the natural color of Ankle Boot. He always appeared grey in the lamplight. Cleaning women tried to bath him again and again. His fur would lighten a little, but a few days later (due to walks through the dusty tubes), Ankle Boot was back to his usual dusty color.

One fine day in March, Ankle Boot took a girlfriend to the underground, but his happiness didn't last long. The "woman" was unable to adapt to underground life and she left him the next day. Ankle Boot lived in solitude. No feline had gone underground and exchanged sunlight for semi-dark tubes.

Once one of the engineers took Ankle Boot to his flat, but the cat didn't want to leave Moscow’s underground life. In protest, he went on a hunger strike. Two days later, the only alternative was to take Ankle Boot back to the underground. It was only there that he was willing to eat.

Ankle Boot was an angel for workers of the Krasnogvardeyskaya station and for engineers of the green subway line. They said if anyone was in a bad mood or problems ensued, Ankle Boot came and sat beside them and everything was okay.
